CRANBERRY ORANGE SCONES

I believe this is Downton Abbey worthy....

We had our very first scones while living in Maine.

As all eyes are watching the final season of our beloved Downton,
it's rather fun to set the stage for elegance and high tea.....
This is my favorite dialogue line in episode one!
Oh how I do love Maggie Smith!!
Ever since The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie!

This is my grandmother's pastry blender..
I love, love, love using their vintage kitchen tools.

CRANBERRY ORANGE SCONES

2 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup white sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup fresh cranberries, chopped
 Zest of 1 lemon
Zest of 1 orange
2/3 cup milk

Somehow the combination of orange and cranberry
will forever be a taste of the holidays...
takes me home again....always!

I agree with Robbie (Yes, he follows Downton)..
can Mr. Bates and Anna please just go be "HAPPY!"

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.

Cut the butter into small pieces and blend into the flour mixture with a pastry blender or two knives. The mixture should look like coarse crumbs.

Stir in the cranberries and mixed fruit peel, making sure not to crush the berries.
Add the milk and stir until just combined. Do not over mix.

Pat the dough gently on a lightly floured surface. Roll or pat the dough into a circle that is 8 inches round and about ½ to 1 inch thick. Transfer each wedge onto a baking sheet.

Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly browned and a toothpick inserted into the center of the scone comes out clean. Mix a glaze of ½ cup powdered sugar and 2-3 t. milk or orange juice. Drizzle glaze over warm scones.

  1. You love using your grandmother's vintage kitchen tools. Then you would love to look at a blog I found, while on Instagram. "Remembering the Old Ways." Oh what a joy! She doesn't update her blog, often. But when she does, it is lovely.

She daily posts a picture and a few words, on her Instagram though.

    1. Oooops! I pushed the wrong button! :-)

Yes, she posts a daily pic and few words, on her Instagram. It is not a private IG, so you can see it. But can not comment or Like it, unless you join IG.

I'll bet you will be mesmerized by it though. As I am!!!!!

And you will get to love pictures of her kitty 'George.' :-) As well as of her 6 year old twins. Oh how she dresses them. And how she lives a lovely, softer, gentler life.

Can you tell????? I just love her IG!!!!

      Gentle hugs....

  2. Yummy! Cranberry Scones and Downton Abbey. What a great combination!! I love your antique cruet set! I have a similar one that was my grandparents. Is the other rose coloured glass and silver item a pickle or sugar holder? I've not seen one before. They sure had some great gadgets back then! Have a great day!

    1. Hey Pamela! Yes, it is actually a cranberry glass pickle holder that was my grandmother Estelle's. Gorgeous isn't it? The cruet belonged to my parents and came from a plantation in the Delta of Mississippi. The scones are delicious! Hope you are having a lovely winter...blessings and hugs for visiting today!

  3. Oh I do love Downton Abbey! Cranberry and orange scones with afternoon tea...delightful. I haven't made scones for a while and maybe it's time to remedy that! Your red transferware is gorgeous, Betsy. Violet and Isobel have the best banters--oh I'm going to miss those two! Enjoy your afternoon! ♥

  7. We shall wake to fresh snow tomorrow and this recipe sounds heavenly for such a morning. I start getting kind of excited on Friday anticipating Downton Abbey on Sunday evening. It'll be a lovely way to get through winter. And, yes, it would be lovely if Anna and Bates could be happy.

  9. I am definitely going to make those scones...they look fantastic.. But of course I'm watching Downton Abbey. You bet! I just bought the 6th season. I have all the others. I love going back after a time and rewatching things over. I always see things I've missed.
Today I bought Downton Abbey Milady lace curtains for the living room. I cannot wait for them to arrive!! I loved seeing the pictures you posted. For one thing I missed what was said between Mr. Bates and Anna. I'm going to rewatch the whole thing. Will Anna get pregnant? Such anticipation!! :)
