SWEET POTATO BISCUITS

One summer morning, while I was visiting
the Divine Miss M in Atlanta,
we drove about 1 1/2 hours to have
lunch in the small town of Social Circle
to dine at The Blue Willow Inn.

We thought we surely had taken a wrong turn
as we were in the middle of the countryside in Georgia
with nothing in sight.....but...then....
there it was....that quaint little southern town
known as Social Circle!
Signs along the road saying..
"This way to The Blue Willow Inn."

She's quite a beauty isn't she?

This is true old south!
Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind,
dined at The Blue Willow. So did Lewis Grizzard!
Lewis Grizzard (of whom we were faithful followers)
was a Southern humorist and journalist.
He dined on fried chicken, hot cornbread, sweet potato souffle,
Lima beans, squash casserole, green beans, rice and
ten slices of fried green tomatoes!
The next day he wrote a rave review
in his column in the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution!

Once you find a seat, they will place a big glass of cold lemonade in front of you!
Then it's time to graze the buffet!

You simply must save room for the dessert table......
It's so very special that places like The Blue Willow Inn
still exist serving the authentic southern recipes
of our grandparents!

These biscuits, which are only slightly sweet, make a fantastic companion for pork chops or ham. Serve them HOT from the oven so that when the biscuit is split, the butter melts right into them!

SWEET POTATO BISCUITS
~Blue Willow Inn
2 cups flour
1 t. salt
1 t. baking soda
1 T. sugar
1/3 cup butter
1 cup cooked, mashed sweet potato
3/4 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. In a large bowl, sift together flour, salt, baking soda and sugar. Cut in the cold butter and then add the cooked sweet potato and buttermilk. This will make a stiff dough.  Toss the dough onto a floured board and knead lightly. Roll out the dough to 1/2 inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter. Bake until golden brown about 12-15 minutes.

    3. Estelle! How in the world are you? I was so happy when I saw you had stopped by. Granddaughter and her family, grandson and his little family..they all live in Georgia.
I must ask her about this Inn to see if she has ever visitied. I love the name...
It sounds wonderful. So many are writing that they have had none or just a little snow this winter so far. It's sad. We have a bit on our mountain range which I can see from our home..but it's been warm..but..we are in Southern California. What in the world would I expect? Well, as a young girl..we had snow...lots of it..but no more.
Again, thank you for stopping by. I get at a loss for something to post..thank you for making me feel better! :)
      Big hugs..HUGE ones..
