Now come on....
you knew we were never going to give up pie, didn't you?
If you come to visit Estelle's,
I would probably make sure to have a
freshly baked buttermilk pie on hand!
It's the best of the south
and
one that you can savor in any tea room worthy of your visit!
One of my goals is to use my favorite
cookbooks and serve our favorite recipes throughout the year!
Pie just makes one happy, don't you think?
"Deluxe desserts are fine, but some of the best country classics
are edible simplicity.
Buttermilk pie is as basic as can be,
and while it is possible for one's
head to be turned at the buffet table
by more elaborate confections,
it would be a grievous error to neglect
this perfect pastry."
~Blue Willow Inn
I have made many buttermilk pies
so I have adapted the Blue Willow Inn's
original recipe to my own.
THE BUTTERMILK PIE
3 eggs, slightly beaten
1 1/2 cup sugar
3 T. flour
1/2 cup softened butter
1 cup buttermilk
1 t. vanilla
1 t. lemon juice
Nutmeg
1 unbaked 9-inch pie shell
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Combine the eggs, sugar, flour and butter
in a mixing bowl and beat with hand mixer
until smooth.
Add the buttermilk, vanilla and lemon juice
and beat about one minute more.
Pout mixture into an unbaked pie shell.
Sprinkle with nutmeg.
Bake for 50 minutes until filling is set.
Serve warm or cold.
Perfection!
Men seem to especially like pie! This looks very much like a custard pie...is it?
ReplyDeleteIf you have never had Buttermilk Pie, I hope you treat yourself soon! i would say the texture is similiar to Chess pie, rather than a custard pie Vee. It's marvelous!
DeleteMy mom used to make buttermilk pie. Being on a farm meant we always had a surplus of milk and mother would often churn her own butter and was left with buttermilk. She used it for a lot of her recipes that called for regular milk...but I do remember this pie! Have a wonderful Monday- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteBetsy, You are a southern girl . :):) I love the way that pie looks...reminds me of sugar cream pie. Which is one of my favorites. Blessings to you, xoxo, Susie
ReplyDeleteedible simplicity. I love that!
ReplyDeleteand this pie was my daddy's favorite.
so I have two lovely memories here in one. thank you! xo♥
I do not use buttermilk but make my own wth milk and vinegar will that still work to make this pie
ReplyDeleteNo.....only use real buttermilk to make a buttermilk pie. You will not get the rich taste if using regular milk and vinegar! This is a southern classic and it is divine!
DeleteI'm about as Southern as they come but never been much of a dessert maker. So, I need Estelle to enlighten me here. When I was growing up our little local cafe made the best pies. One that was outta this world was called egg custard. Would that be the same as this buttermilk pie? And what's the difference in taste of buttermilk pie and chess pie? You got me craving some pie!
ReplyDeleteThere is a difference in taste Tobe. You will need to try this for yourself....most everyone in the south loves Buttermilk pie! Hope you try it and love it!
DeleteWell, I made your custard pie for mah boyfriend and he was a very happy man...it's his favorite. So now I'll have to make this one for him too. You make him very happy with these recipes!! π
ReplyDeleteI come from a long line of pie loving people, but I don't think we ever had buttermilk pie. I guess the closest we came was custard pie. It looks yummy, though! -Jenn
