NEW LANDSCAPING DESIGNS

Spring in Texas can be very unpredictable!

We know to prepare for large thunderstorms, high winds
and a few hail storms.
We lost a gorgeous Wax Myrtle tree in a snow/ice storm
about five years ago that stood proudly in this corner
and provided privacy for our pool area.

This entire bed is soon to be cleared and redesigned.

For the first few years after we bought this home,
we enjoyed the landscaping but something was just not quite right to me...
the shrubs required a lot of maintenance and trimming..
I also was not in love with the various types of shrubs that had been planted here.

We came across a local landscape architect who has created
a beautiful design selecting plants I love...
he is adding color, interest and a gorgeous variety
which will do well in Texas!

We spend alot of time in our backyard and pool area
so we both feel this will be a good investment.

We also decided after much anguish to cut down our Bradford Pear tree...
it was so beautiful but as we all know, Bradford Pears will split
after so many years and our fear was that one of our spring storms
would topple this tree right onto our house!!!!
This was last summer after a thunderstorm.
This tree also required yearly trimming which makes
the trunk weak with all the large numerous branches.

If you are a fan of Southern Living's, the Grumpy Gardener, you
know how much he detests a Bradford Pear.......here's why

This was a step-by-step process....
finding someone to take out the tree ring, then selecting a replacement tree
at a nearby tree farm, scheduling the Bradford Pear to be cut down,
planting the new tree, which is a Chinese Pistache, then rebuilding the tree ring.

We have a lovely Crepe Myrtle which is lavender and white
that should fair much better now that it will enjoy more sunlight.

This was a good experience and the tree farm did such a great
professional job....
We are pretty excited about our new update and gardenscape...
What's going on at your home this season?
Are your working on projects, going on vacation or
perhaps planning a July 4th Barbecue?

  1. Sounds wonderful, Betsy! I have heard about the love/hate relationship folks have with the Bradford Pear Trees. How nice to have the option you took. Keep sharing the landscaping. (Love this header!)

    1. Hi Vee.....we loved our Bradford Pear but with high winds during storms, it was a real worry. They plant them here often as they are fast growing but most always will split and fall eventually. Better safe than sorry. Hope you are enjoying some pretty Spring weather!

  2. Funny you should ask this today... have just gotten all my beds cleaned out and replanted, much to the dismay of my back, and everything was starting to grow and bloom and my walks just made me happy...happy blooms!
Until this morning when I took Sophie Jane out at 5:45........because of the major rains we’ve had, the lake is rising. Is now up in the yard and all of my hard work will be for naught. My flowers are sitting in about 6 in of water now with more to come all next week. I’m just sick. So tired of the rain and flooding.
I think I’ll go back to bed and hope it was a dream...

    1. Hi Janey...I am sick for you. I will say that the amount of landscaping we changed out was very, very hard work! We are at a stage in life that we can no longer do long periods of back breaking digging and planting. Maintaining a beautiful yard and landscape is well worth the money and effort but it certainly can be a challenge keeping everything in good shape! I so hope you are able to salvage some of this!
