A BUMP IN THE ROAD OF MAE'S LIFE JOURNEY

We have had a rather tough beginning to December, 2016.
My purpose in sharing our news of Mae Mobley's recent
health development, is that it may possibly help others.
Or...perhaps a dear reader of Estelle's has experienced the same
issue with their adult cat.

Mae has been diagnosed with
Idiopathic Epilepsy.
She began drooling a few times per day
about two weeks ago.
Then it progressed to drooling and becoming
incontinent simultaneously.
This is when I made her an appointment
at the veterinarian.
The afternoon she was to have her appointment,
she experienced a Grand Mal seizure.
This was frightening and very upsetting to all three of us.
Luckily it occurred thirty minutes prior to her appointment.

Mae is NOT a good patient.
However, it was progress that she
willingly came out of her carrier and
let the darling assist in weighing her
without anyone getting scratched.
They had to put her to sleep for about
five minutes in order to draw blood
for comprehensive lab tests.
All of her test results came back very, very good.
We are so thankful for that.

Long story short, she apparently
has developed Epilepsy.
There is no known cause of this disease.
It may be congenital or hereditary.
She has been started on
Zonisamide once per day.
Her prognosis is good and
the medication once a day for the rest of her life
should control her seizures.

Mae Mobley is our darling girl...my baby....my love..my heart.
I ask that you please say a heartfelt prayer for this little precious.
It's been a tough week.

  5. Betsy, I am happy to read that all her tests came back good. This is certainly a bump in the road for her (and you, though, but I know she is in good, loving hands. I said a prayer for her today as I know that these precious souls are loved, too. She is in my thoughts and I truly hope that the meds will keep this under control. Mae is young; she has lots to do yet. :) Sending a hug, Deb

  7. Oh Betsy, I'm very sorry to hear that Miss Mae has been sick. Like Vee, I'm glad the problem has been diagnosed and glad there is medicine to control this. My parents' lab had epilepsy; they discovered it when she was very young (maybe a year old?). Anyway, she lived to be about 15 years old, and she also took medicine for the condition.

I will pray for Mae and for you; I know how it hurts us when our pets are sick.

    Hugs to you,

    Denise at Forest Manor

  8. Oh, my dear! I am so sorry! Happy it is something that can be managed.
Yes, I will say a prayer for your Sweet Mae this evening. My daughter, Amber, sent me a photo of her beloved white lab tonight. His name is Shiner and he is in poor health. He suffers from hip dysplasia and now his liver functions are bad. He is allergic to so many things - like grass! And he is a trained hunting dog! God does care about what we care about - so prayers for Mae and Shiner tonight as I go to bed....Your cat is so blessed to be with you.

  16. Oh my, that is so scary. I had a dog who developed seizures out of no where...turned out to be caused by treats I was giving her (they were from China...remember that awful scare?). I do hope your sweet Mae does well on her medication. It's so hard to have a beloved pet sick. Prayers for her and you!

  17. Hi Estelle. I am a relatively new subscriber and just wanted to reach out to you. My Cairn terrier had his first seizure come on out of the blue when he was 15. It happened at 4:00 in the morning. He slept with me and I kept thinking why is he screwing around in the bed so much...he needs to stop whatever he's doing and be still. Ha! I finally turned on the light and saw he was having a seizure. To say I was shocked would be an understatement. I swear, it took years off my life. He, too, was put on Zonisamide and did very well on it. Over the next two years he only had two more episodes...and I think one of those was because I forgot his evening pill. I live in a smaller city and found that Sam's Club had the best price on this drug. Some of the drug stores I called wanted an arm and leg for it!

Anyway, I sure hope that Mae does well and the medicine keeps her seizures at bay. I will be thinking of you and praying for all the best for that sweet kitty of yours.

    1. Hi Tobe! I cannot tell you how much this means to me. Bless you for reaching out and sharing your ordeal with your sweet fur baby. Your feelings describe my exact sentiments. It has rocked our world. It is comforting to know and hear that this medication helped your terrier. I am praying it will not happen again. The Vet cautioned us on the cost of the drug, but we were pleasantly surprised to find out Kroger pharmacy only charged $12 for her 1 month supply. Thank you ever so much for sharing, and for visiting me. It had been a true blessing. Merry, merry Christmas!
